Unemployment Control

Unemployment compensation control services

Over the past few years, the high burden of benefit payments resulting from high unemployment has seriously depleted the State of Michigan unemployment insurance trust fund. Because of the massive increase in claims volume along with agency staff reductions and the closing of claim offices, state claims examiners are not equipped to investigate claims properly thus most of this burden falls back to employers. Employers should not rely on the State to follow up on claims from those who quit their last job or were discharged for cause.

Employers can limit their unemployment insurance costs from layoffs that are either seasonal or temporary in nature. Refusal of suitable employment generally should disqualify an individual currently collecting unemployment insurance benefits. Detachment from the labor market is also disqualifying. There are numerous personnel practices that employers can implement to reduce this cost, however if employers do not respond properly and aggressively it will mean in many cases as much as $10,000 depleted from the employer’s reserve account. Without some level of claims control, many employers will pay double digit tax rates. This means, instead of paying less than $100 per employee for unemployment insurance taxes per year, it could cost well over $1,000 per employee for this cost per year.

Protect your profit margins today with a strict unemployment insurance cost containment program. We can maximize your unemployment insurance claims savings and thus help you achieve the lowest possible tax rate under the law.

Services Include

  • Developing systems to prevent unwarranted claims.
  • Developing policies for proper documentation leading to an employee's termination.
  • Avoiding claims of discrimination.
  • Defining an independent contractor.
  • Reviewing pertinent documentation prior to hearings.
  • Determining appropriate witnesses to bring about favorable dispositions.
  • Preparing witnesses for participation at hearings.
  • Attending hearings as required. Many employers use lawyers which is costly and not necessary.
  • Filing protests on all claim determinations with which client disagrees.
  • Filing a brief to appeal any unfavorable decision issued by State Administrative Hearing Officers.
  • Requesting and monitoring credits where applicable.
Workers Compensation

Workers compensation control services

You face endless pressures from the marketplace to reduce operating expenses in order to stay competitive and maintain reasonable profitability. While we cannot offer solutions to all your overhead expenses, our Industrial Medical Services Program (IMS) will significantly reduce your workers’ compensation related expenses.

Our goal is to provide this service free of charge to our clients. Contact us for details.

The Problem

Through strong lobbying by organized labor, Michigan has enacted decidedly lopsided workers’ compensation laws. This has resulted in increased operating expenses for all manufacturing businesses in the state.

According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, workers’ compensation insurance and related lost time expenses can increase base salaries by more than 12.4%.

  • Michigan is one of only five states that lets an employee select their own treating physician.
  • Michigan is one of only four states that allows an employee to collect compensation benefits equal to 80% of the employee’s spendable income.
  • In Michigan, attorneys are allowed to charge a fee of up to 30% of an employee’s benefits or award for representing them in workers’ compensation matters - the highest fee structure in the nation.
  • There are no time or monetary limitations on medical benefits paid in Michigan.
  • While the incidence rate for cases with days away from work has declined, rates for cases with days of restricted work activity have increased, and in 1998 the rate was higher than the rate for cases with days away from work.

The Solution

The formula for reducing worker's compensation costs is simple:

Injury Prevention + Loss Control = Lower Worker's Compensation Costs

According to a study conducted by Michigan State University, the best methods to reduce worker's compensation costs are:

  • Availability of on-site medical care.
  • Timely, accurate accident reporting and investigation.
  • Training programs in safe lifting techniques, hand safety and hazard recognition.
  • Return-to-work programs allowing injured employees to return to work gradually, from light-duty assignments to full-time duty.

Industrial Medical Services Program

Through our industrial medical services program we will:

  • Provide you with an on-call or an on-site Industrial Medical Specialist who will provide first aid and safety consultation services.
  • Significantly reduce down time by minimizing time away from the job because of an injury or illness.
  • Provide savings on every payroll dollar. By decreasing the frequency and severity of reportable worker’s compensation cases, your payroll-based insurance premiums will be reduced. In addition, these savings are compounded from year to year.
  • Provide you with a Light or Restricted Duty Program. One of the keys to minimizing lost time is to keep the employee in the same daily routine of coming to work.
  • Substantially reduce your first aid treatment expenses. Our cost for administering first aid (including supplies) is more than 130% less on the average than comparable treatment at an industrial clinic.
  • Provide timely, accurate accident reporting and investigation.
  • Provide on-site drug screening.
  • Reduce the dollar value of claims by limiting the severity of accidents or by eliminating them altogether.
  • Provide eligibility for schedule rating credits and other incentive programs that may be offered by your insurance carriers.
  • Provide training programs in safe lifting techniques, hand safety and hazard recognition.
  • Help to control medical billing mistakes through review of bills for surgeries and other major medical procedures.
  • Provide your employees with a preferred rate for home health and adult care services.
